I can heartily recommend Caroline’s house. The house is terrific and Caroline was very welcoming and accommodating. Though she doesn’t live in Sweden, it was easy to get in touch with her and/or her housekeeper and her neighbor, who helped with the rental.
We had a wonderful stay at this property. It is a large, clean, welcoming stone house typical of Gotland, with plenty of room for a group or two families traveling together. The third floor has two large bedrooms, one with a double bed. On the second floor is a living room, furnished with comfortable sofas and a piano, which was a great place to relax in the long summer evenings. There are also two bedrooms with two twin beds each in them on this floor, as well as (at least) two more bedrooms, each with bunkbeds. There’s also one bathroom with a tub (with a handheld shower) on the second floor. On the first floor is a dining room, a half-bath, a shower, kitchen, a utility room and the washing machine. All the beds are comfortable and the windows are equipped with screens so you can have them open at night—we all slept very well! The eat-in kitchen is large and bright. It’s stocked with everything you might need.
We used the dining room once or twice when it was raining, but when the weather was nice we sat outside, either at the covered patio in the back or the small patio at the side of the house, which gets sun in the morning—perfect for our first cup of coffee. My son (12) loved reading in the hammock in the garden. The garden is quite private, enclosed in the back by a fantastic lilac hedge that was flowering when we were there in June.
When you stay at this house you’re surrounded by the lovely Gotland landscape with its fields and pastures. It is peaceful and quiet and not far from the beach. In the mornings we took walks along the country roads and during the day visited various wildlife sanctuaries for birdwatching or to visit old cultural sites, of which there are so many in Gotland. You have a choice of two villages nearby for groceries, banks, etc, though for much more than that, you’d drive in to Visby, which isn’t too far. We also took a boat to Stora Karlsö. We visited nearby artisans (including a woman whose pottery I’d bought 20 years before in Stockholm!) and a few local cafes, as well as many of the beautiful old churches you see everywhere. We hope to return soon!
Our family stayed at this beautiful, historical home for a week in May 2013 and it was absolutely wonderful. This is no ordinary Swedish rental home: it's a magical, 200-year-old "farmhouse" on the famous island of Gotland. If you're looking for a genuine Swedish country-side experience, this is a dream spot. And don't be fooled by the "farm house" description. This is not how the average Swede lives -- this is the kind of home most Swedes dream of owning all their lives but few are able to. It's truly a one-of-a-kind property. And you get to stay here!
There are numerous bedrooms that are charmingly decorated, a beautiful living room with a fire place, a large formal dining room, a rustic country kitchen and a covered patio perfect for small dinner parties (there are more rooms than this, but these are the ones we ended up using). The grounds are impressively large with wide open lawns and several outdoor spots with pretty furniture where you can enjoy breakfast, a cup of coffee or an afternoon nap.
The house is situated close to a charming, small town with several stores, coffee shops and a fish market. And it's a perfect spot for day trips to Visby or any of the other attractions this island has to offer. We had several day trips planned, but guess what ended up happening? We did a couple of excursions but stayed at the house most of the time, simply soaking in the beauty of our surroundings and feeling the joy of being in the moment.
I can't recommend this wonderful home more, and we are eager to return again next year.
We were 10 guests, friends and family from the US and Europe who came to share this wonderful house for three weeks last summer. It was lovely. The real, real Gotland and close to the ocean, mideival churches and
amazing farmer's markets. We rode, swam, explored Visby, the kids took sailing classes, we even went to a country circus and had dinner (lamb, what else?) with the local farmer. The youg uns partied in town a couple of times as well.
Take the daytrip to the outer islands for a South Sea experience and rent a bike while you are there!
We'll be back! Thank you Caroline for being such a great hostess!
