Modest and Comfortable Home Base
In my opinion there are two basic strategies when visiting Hawai'i. Staying on a resort, where everything is measured, manicured, touristy, off a post card. Sure it's pretty, but it's also expensive. The other strategy is to emulate living there. Surprisingly the less expensive strategy! Also, with the emulate living there strategy, you more quickly discover the true magic of Hawai'i... the spirit of Aloha. Off resort Hawai'i is more relaxed, more beautiful, and as locals say "more better"!
Killino Farms perfectly encapsulates the emulates the living there strategy. We spent 90% or our time there lounging on the lanai. Great view of sunsets, lots of birds to watch/listen to, comfortable chairs, and a table. The kitchen is well stocked, which we cooked many meals in. There's a grocery store called Choicemart, not far away in Caltain Cook that's got a great selection, as well as the South Kona Fruit stand a bit to the south for some great local fruit (after you burn through the welcome basket from the Killino's!). The farm is off there main road so it's quite easy to get places. The beds are comfortable, and the night is filled with ambient sound. If you are a light sleeper, might want ear plugs. I kinda love it, but not everyone is into coqui frogs, crickets, insects, the occasional corus of dogs, and nearing sunrise, roosters.
As others have mentioned the driveway needs to be taken slowly. We rented a jeep but mostly because parking and exploring on a lot of island is easier with 4 wheel drive. The driveway is probably a bit surprising for people who are used to everything being perfectly paved, but it's pretty standard for the island. It's traversable with most cars.
Overall, the place is chill, no frills, but everything you need in a home base between adventures
We really enjoyed our stay!
Great Kona side location
Very generous offer to pick fruit from the farm. And macadamia nuts! We appreciated a fruit bowl and some coffee upon arrival.
For divers: convenient rinsing options. Warm water hose, several heavy duty hooks where your gear can be dried under the roof.
For drivers: the 1/4 mile access will not be a problem if you rent a high clearance vehicle. Which is always a good idea if you want to drive around Big Island, especially because the rental price difference is minimal.
For cooks: great, just great, set of top quality brand name pots and pans.
Mahalo for a very nice stay!
A great property!
Wonderfully appointed apartment in a great location. Beds are comfortable. Extra towels and linens are readily available. Everything you need to prepare your food is found in the cupboards. Todd was welcoming and shared great insight into producing coffee and mac nuts. For dog lovers like myself the 2 resident dogs are very friendly and were a welcome addition to my stay.
Great location and welcoming stay
Todd and Kimberly were very good with communications. Todd was very welcoming on our arrival. All was as expected or exceeded expectations. We were provided a farm tour, some fresh fruit and Kona coffee. The kitchen was easily and adequately stocked for preparing meals. We very much appreciated the available snorkel gear, towels and cooler. Our AWD intermediate SUV was adequate for the driveway. Location was great for our many island explorations. We enjoyed the relatively local Coffee Shack, Manago Hotel lunch, Greenwell tour, Painted Church, Big Island Bee Farm, nighttime swim with manta rays and sunset from the lanai. Snorkeling at 2 Step was great, but water access requires navigating rough rocks and water. Ho’okena Beach had easier water access. If you are a light sleeper, bring ear plugs and mask as there are bright sunrises and (wonderful) symphony of nature sounds.
