I stayed in the tower in Sutri for a week in late August 2013. Sutri is a totally typical and unspoilt ancient and medieval hill top town in northern Lazio, a 15 minute drive from beautiful Lake Bracciano (which is wonderful for swimming!). In a week I did not hear any non-Italian voices at all. There are a number of good restaurants and bars in the town. For visits to Rome it is incredibly only 50km by road and there are good bus connections. The house itself is right at the heart of the town just two minutes from the main square, which was the site of the ancient forum. Inside it is immaculately clean and well furnished with two bathrooms and plenty of living space, including a small outside terrace overlooking the beautiful countryside. Being a thousand year o.d tower, there are some steps, but no able bodied person should find them a problem. There is a well equipped kitchen and a small shop down the road for basic foodstuffs. In the area are a number of fabulous sights, including amazing Etruscan remains at Tarquinia and Cerveteri, a wonderful cathedral at Civita Castella, and, indeed, right in Sutri, and very interesting cathedral, an ancient Etruscan/Roam amphitheatre and an unusual ancient rock chapel. A very interesting area in character and high quality accommodation. And the owners could not have been more helpful, hospitable and obliging.
Insgesamt sehr empfehlenswert.
We spent an amazing week here recently. This holiday house is inside an medieval tower. The tower itself is an architectural gem--a historically significant address, but eminently comfortable and elegantly appointed. The beautiful view from the window in the living room surprised us every morning. There is also a charming terrace on which we regularly ate lunch and dinner (when we weren't eating in one of Sutri's terrific local eateries). Just below the tower is a charming little piazza with a bubbling fountain and a bar for morning cappuccino and afternoon caffé. We spent some lovely days exploring Sutri itself, but also used the tower and the town as a base for day trips to Orvieto (Umbria), Capalbio, Orbetello and the Monte Argentario (Tuscany), as well as the incredible sights closer to Sutri--the Etruscan antiquities in Tarquinia and the various necropoli scattered about the countryside. We also dashed down to Trevignano, on the shores of the delightful Lago di Bracciano, just ten minutes away. Day trips to Rome are also extremely easy by car, bus or train. In short, Sutri is a fantastically rich place on its own, but also out of the way and mostly untouched by common tourism. We were the only tourists in sight for the best part of the week (and the locals are pretty friendly, in a matter of fact way). And the tower is as comfortable and as interesting a holiday address as you are likely to find in Italy.
