What a lovely cottage!
For a real authentic French village experience, this charming cottage is perfectly situated in the picturesque town of Villeneuve-Sur Yonne. It is quiet and comfortable, looking onto a beautiful Summer garden with fruit trees a stream and even some ducks.
The cottage is spacious, clean and has everything you would need for your stay - just bring your clothes.
The owners were so charming and I even went with them for an outing to the traditional French market! For the energetic there are bicycles to use if you want to explore the local countryside.
A short leisurely stroll through the town takes you straight to the river Yonne where you can relax or eat at one of the restaurants. By car there really is so much to see and do in the area that one visit is not enough. I went to the beautiful Vézelay Abbey for sightseeing and tasted the delicious sparkling wines in the quarry cellars of Bailly Lapierre.
This is really a perfect escape out of the rat race of the city!

From the friendly welcome we received on our arrival to the sad goodbyes as we left, we felt cossetted throughout our stay. As our French was non existent we were pleased to find in English a folder of recommended places to visit thoughtfully put together by the owners. Jean and Jo also made additional recommendations on places to visit.
The accommodation was beautifully presented, immaculately clean and with the crispest bed linen that made sleeping each night a delight. The home provided all necessary cooking facilities to enable us to enjoy cooking with local ingredients from the local market.
The property is within walking distance of the bakery, deli, dairy open till late, and the twice a week market.A very short drive also gets you to the local supermarket.Very convenient.
The property listing is very accurate. However it does not convey the warm atmosphere that is part of this welcoming holiay accommodation. And the raspberries are just wonderful.
We hope that if we return to France we will be able to use this accommodation again. Thanks Jean and Jo
Description was very accurate. Owner (son of the couple who live next door) informed us before we had agreed to the rental that the bathroom was off one of the bedrooms, in case this was a problem. The kitchen and living areas are fairly small, as can be seen in the photos, but the bedrooms, opening off the living room on either side are more spacious than they look in the photos and have good wardrobes and shelves. Although the house is all on one level, there are steepish steps down to the garden, and the beds are low, so it would probably not suit people with mobility problems.
The garden is lovely - the stream running through it is clean and with plenty of wildlife - suitable for children to paddle.
We received a very warm welcome from the Vervoittes, who live in the house beside. They don't speak English, though understand a little. Again, we were informed of this in advance and have enough French to communicate. The house was very clean, with everything provided - enough towels, bedlinen etc and there was milk, coffee, sugar etc and a variety of other supplies. The owners were very helpful with information and anything extra we might need. They took some oldish, but working bikes down from their loft and we were able to use these. There is a handy shop less than 5 minutes walk away which is open from early morning till late at night, every day (including Sunday) with most basics, including wine, dairy products, fruit and vegetables.
There are other shops in the town, including bakeries and a reasonable sized supermarket with everything within walking distance, though cycling was even quicker. With the help of the owners, we found out how to access the tennis courts in the town - one indoor, 2 outdoor. I think there is a swimming area by the river, though we were unlucky with the weather so didn't investigate. This area of France might not be the best for visitors who have no French at all, as it's not very "touristy" and many people don't speak English.
There was a folder of information, in English, with instructions for microwave/oven and other appliances and lots of information about places to visit locally and further afield. We didn't try any of the local restaurants as we like to cook, but there seemed to be a reasonable variety.
Overall, we had a very enjoyable stay in Villeneuve - the rental price make it excellent value for money and we particularly enjoyed the chats with the Vervoittes.
We stayed at the cottage for a few days in early June 2011, the weather was a little temperamental but the cottage and the very helpful owners, who live next door made our stay worthwhile. The town and area is lovely, although a little quiet when we were there, and the cottage is ideal for town and country outings. Trains are close by. The cottage is compact but very well maintained and equipped, and the owners were so kind with gifts of garden produce etc.
Well worth a visit.
