I feel that I really cannot speak highly enough of this property and the owners! My husband's father and siblings all live in different states across the country, and so twice a year we rent a house and all come together for a week. We have been doing this for 5 years or so, and so we have rented a lot of houses, and I think this is the best one we have had!
The house is absolutely beautiful inside, very historic and lots of woodwork. Big beautiful windows. We stayed for a week during the winter, and the view was lovely, I imagine it is even more so when all the trees are green again! Unfortunately, the interstate is not far from the property, and you can see it from the kitchen window. I imagine this is also much better when the trees can block this view a bit more.
The house also has very spacey rooms and an impressive amount of storage space. We really loved all of the closets and shelves throughout the property that made our stay super convenient and organized. Also, we really loved the furniture choices. The beds especially were incredibly comfortable! And the couch and sitting chairs in the living room were very comfy as well!
The location was perfect too. Only 5 minutes from Natural Bridge and 20 minutes from Lexington. We went into Lexington a lot to explore downtown and eat at some nice restaurants. My husband works at Washington and Lee and so we enjoyed showing our family around the campus.
The actual grounds the cottage is on is about 50 acres, and was very lovely to walk through. There were also horses that we could feed! The owners gave us a tour of the estate house while we were there, which was fascinating. The tour must have lasted over 2 hours, there were so many rooms and levels to see, and history to learn!
Finally, I think what made our stay so enjoyable was the accessability of our hosts! The owners actually live on site in the estate house. A few times during our stay we found we needed something (one time we accidently got locked out!) and Cliff responded to messages within 5 or 10 minutes, and were able to come to the house for whatever we needed within 15 minutes, which was fantastic! We were just so impressed by how gracious, hospitable, and accessible they were, and would highly recommend their property to anyone looking to stay in the Virginia Blue Ridge!
We had a wonderful time. Because we came at Christmas Mr. Devito decorated our cottage with a beautiful Christmas tree and accents. This is the perfect indication of his attention to detail. He graciously gave all of us a tour of the historic mansion. We immediately felt at home and we are looking forward to our next visit
My family just finished up our second stay in Vine Cottage--and I'm sure it won't be the last. This house is *much* nicer than other rental houses that we have used over the years: it is clean, comfortable, and spacious, and it just feels like a home! The kitchen has plenty of space (and all of the basics that you need to cook a nice meal).
What really makes this location special, though, is the thoughtful and attentive (but not intrusive) owners, and their beautiful historic estate! The property features an amazing mansion (the "manor") from 1806--which the owners are currently renovating to open as a bed-and-breakfast soon. We got a private tour, and it's clear that they are preserving this beautiful home with a careful attention to detail and focus on quality. When the manor does open as a B&B, it will be truly amazing! Both Vine Cottage and the manor have picturesque views of the surrounding estate, including fields (which our dogs really enjoyed), pond, and trees.
Our party of 10 had plenty of space to mingle, room to cook and dine, and privacy in the sprawling 5BR "cottage." Our hosts were so accommodating, kind, and willing to share their knowledge of the 50 acre property. This was our first stay with HomeAway and we all wished this was our actual home. The linens and bedding were luxurious and comfy. The home was charmingly furnished, modestly priced, a slice of history, and the perfect place to make some memories. I couldn't have asked for more for our meet up to celebrate the holidays together. Coffee, creamers, and a Christmas tree welcomed us. Chris & Cliff, their home, and their dear horses all stole our hearts. We'd love to be back when the restorations are complete on the gorgeous mansion and have a stay in the B&B with friends! They are doing it right here, folks. Plenty to visit in the area or stay home and relax. The Vine Cottage is a true hidden gem surrounded with breathtaking views!
I would give this cottage and their owners, Cliff and Chris, 10 stars if I could! The photos of the cottage do not give the true picture. In person, it exceeds any expectations. We met our NJ family there for Thanksgiving. When our grandsons, ages 12 and 13, walked in, their jaws dropped! (It has to be impressive if tween and teen boys think it's great!) The cottage is filled with beautiful antiques, vintage light fixtures, gorgeous wood throughout, and plenty of space for the 6 of us, and it will sleep up to 10. Modern conveniences abound, including Smart TV's, Wi-Fi, dishwasher, and new kitchen appliances. There are spectacular views and oodles of space surrounding the cottage. Our grandsons tossed a football and flew a drone outside. Other activities there included long walks and feeding of the 4 horses. Cliff and Chris could not have been better hosts! We will definitely find the opportunity to go there again.
We stayed here with our neighbors for a short fall getaway. We arrived at night and it was a little tricky finding the cottage on the estate, but once we found it everything was great. The cottage is very big and spacious, and the owners took care to provide snacks and water, shampoo and conditioner, and other comfort items that made the stay so much nicer. The beds were very comfortable and the kitchen was well stocked with cookware. We brought food for breakfast and lunch and since there are only a few restaurants locally, it worked out well. The location is perfect for visits to Natural Bridge and the Natural Bridge Safari, the two things we wanted to do while there. The Safari was a very cool experience that all four kids LOVED! We would love to come back for another visit.
