I would have to say that every part of the stay at the beach house was wonderful. It all started with the communication with Tulio who showed a genuine interest in making sure that our stay was one to remember. Everyone in our group of 3 has decided that in the future we would need to spend more time here versus the time we spent in Old San Juan. The property itself is in a wonderful location that is easily accessible while being secluded, quiet and relaxing. The kitchen and first floor area were the center of our activity for our short stay here. The only time that we used the bedrooms were for sleeping or changing. I decided on the second night to sleep in one of the hammocks as the lure of an evening semi- outdoors with the sound of the ocean and its breeze were just steps away. I have stayed on this island at various locations over the last 5 years and by far and away this for me will be the go to place to stay. The kitchen is well stocked with all of the utensils, platters, plates, etc.. that you would ever need. Our group would start off the morning making breakfast burritos and enjoying Puerto Rico's oh so delicious coffee while watching pelicans scanning the water for their breakfast. The stars at night are absolutely amazing and bright. Tulio was a true pleasure to work with as he has a sincere desire that you enjoy your stay here. Thank You Tulio - see you in the future.
The house is a wonderful place for those looking for rest and relaxation. My family and I spent loads of time doing NOTHING and loving it. Hanging out with a good book or taking a snooze in the hammocks (there's 4 and 2 comfy hanging chairs) was lovely. It is so peaceful there. The house is comfortable, spacious and comes with everything you will need.
Snorkeling is at your doorstep, the proximity to the other beaches, like Tamarindo and Flamenco, and the town makes this house an ideal location. We found exploring around the house to be exciting. There's hermit crabs, geckos, iguanas, egrets and a huge crab that lives out back.
Tulio was very helpful and attentive to our stay. He cares about you having a great time, not just with his home but with your time on the island, from food to activities. We would love to come back.
You won't be disappointed!
My family and I traveled to PR for the first time this June. Mr. Ortiz met us at the ferry drop off, which btw, he purchased our ferry tickets to and from Culebra which was a huge plus due to the fact that the wait line was extremely long and the chances of us getting tickets for the ferry were close to impossible if he would not have bought them in advance. Thanks Mr. Ortiz. He drove us to the car rental place while my father and boyfriend rented a jeep. He did a thorough walk-through of his property and the beach it sits on. The place is amazing. So calm, relaxing and beautiful. If you cannot live with a TV, this is not for you. If you are looking for a place to disconnect from TV (lol), this place is for you. We enjoyed nature! The beaches in Culebra are amazing....Flamingo is by far the best!!! Our kids' snorkeling experience was the best. I cannot wait to visit PR again!!!
First of all, let me say this vacation was everything or more we could have asked for. Tulio's Yellow House at Melones provided us with a piece of paradise for the most relaxing vacation ever. Travel from Denver, CO to Culebra, via San Juan, PR was very painless. We opted to book a small plane ride from Isla Grande Airport with Flamenco Air and enjoyed the scenic flight over numerous small islands. Our sailor friends welcomed us and we rented a jeep from Carlos Rental, which turned out to be very handy to get around the island, quite a few hills around.
We went over to the house and Tulio showed us around and provided us with all the necessary information regarding the property, island services and features in general, then left us alone for the 10 days. Upon arrival, we immediately fell in love with the property and it truly felt like home, as everything we needed, was provided. A well stocked kitchen, bedrooms with AC, bathroom with shower and an additional outdoor shower, hammocks and of course the private beach just feet away from the house, just as advertised. The wildlife sightings included iguanas, deer, chickens, birds, along with the usual bugs of the tropics. The sea breeze and a little spraying for bugs kept the bites under control. As chefs, we opted to cook several meals onsite as well as try the local fair at several restaurants, which we all really liked, El Eden, Dingy Dock, Heather's Pizza, Vibra Verde, Pandeli Bakery, Crusted Crab, the food shacks at Flamenco, Tiki's Grill, can't go wrong with any of them. Tulio provided us with a phone # of a local free diving fisherman, who promptly delivered hogfish and grouper to the house, even a lobster by boat later on in the week. Truly amazing, thank you Tony and Drew!
Now, let's talk about the waters around here. We visited about 9 beaches, from the one right on the property to as far as Zoni beach on the east side of the island. We were snorkeling every day, rented the gear at Culebra Divers for the whole trip. Each location provided us with the most beautiful coral and tropical fish along with sea turtles & octopus in spectacular clear waters. Our favorite snorkeling was at Carlo Rosario (about minute hike), Tamarindo, Melones, and even from the right in front of the house. Best sandy beaches, of course the majestic Flamenco and our friends took us to the beloved Tortuga beach on Culebrita by sailboat, wow!
Don't hesitate to book, thank you Tulio for sharing your family's treasure
The house was very clean and comfortable. The ocean, with feeding Eagle Rays and Pelicans, was 20 steps away. We got to nap and read in the hammocks, feeling a warm breeze, during a hot afternoon and during a (short) rainy afternoon. The best fish we saw anyplace were off Tulio's beach and up towards Melones. The best reef we saw was a 15 minute kayak into Melones. You NEED water shoes/flippers to go into the water (sharp coral and spiny urchins). You also need to be ready for mosquitos especially in morning and evening. We took our coffee to the ocean and watched hummingbirds, pelicans, gulls, fish and a ray. Tulio was great! He told us the history of his home and his great-great grandfather. He set us up with kayaks, history, destinations and with Guilin, who took us to Culebrita and showed us the sea stars. I feel like I have a friend in PR now.
Tulio is a fourth generation Culebra native and former USN officer. He is completely trust-worthy and helped us a great deal to plan our first trip to Culebra (arranged a jeep rental with Carlos and snorkling gear with Lemuel). His place was exactly what we wanted: simple beach house on the water, quiet street, short walks to a great snorkling beach and into town for the restaurants. I drove the whole island with an eye to compare places and nothing else comes close.
Melones snorkling has better coral than Carlos Rosario and the spit is better for beach glass than Punta Soldado.
The bunk beds weren't pictured but are basically bunk kings and there is a queen futon in upstairs room. Although only one bathroom, the outdoor shower was nice and private so I never used the indoor shower. We were only 4, but you could easily sleep two families and 8+ there, although you'd be fighting over the rede hammocks.
When we return to Culebra, we are definitely staying at Tulio's.
