We thoroughly enjoyed our week at Head Lake this year. The bunkie is great to have for the younger generation. Caught some nice fish in the lake. Brad and Anne Cooke are very easy to make contact with and very keen to resolve any minor problems that might come up. We wish there were a marina for larger boat rentals on the lake, but we do rent a motor for Brad's boat, which meets most requirements.
Our group of 5 old friends from high school searched high and low for a cottage that offered beach & dock, watercraft, enough sleeping options for both early and later risers, space for indoor activities and close enough to groceries and towns for convenience, while being well enough off the road that there was no traffic sounds, just the sound of the occasional loon and the lapping of the lake against the shoreline. Mission accomplished.
One of the real bonuses with this property was that the bunkie was on the same very large deck as the cottage. The second TV and small toilet in the bunkie, meant there really was a separate area for not only sleeping but also for some to seek solace from the group. Perfect for a second family as well. Although the main bathroom in the cottage appeared to have been re-done, we all chose to shower outside (shower is private, out of the way between the cottage and the bunkie and has hot and cold running water - so it really was delightful).
The weather was excellent and that helped our decision to mainly hang out on the dock and get into swimming in the protected bay in front of the cottage. The water was consistently over 70 degrees, a benefit to a shallow lake. The kayaking/canoeing were also excellent. The ability to launch from the beach made getting in and out of the water simple. We rented a stand up paddle board, no problem launching that either and again the protected bay let the less adventurous give that watercraft a try. (The shallow beach would be great for little kids too.) The steps down to the dock were fine for us, but the less sure footed would want to take their time and watch how they get down the make shift steps/roots.
There was sun all day on the dock and it also provided a great sunset vantage point. Indoors we could play games in the main cottage and relax with a book. But since the Olympics were on, the sports minded in the group were also able to catch up on the highlights at night through the extensive channel listings provided by satellite service. WIFI service was great.
The kitchen was really well appointed, but not fussy. The BBQ was an option we used a lot to avoid cooking indoors during a heatwave. The caretaker of the property lives a few doors away and came by to let us know a full fire ban came into effect during our stay. We had had a fire a few nights before, mmmm s'mores.
Highly recommended for groups of friends or families who want separate spaces!
We had a lovely stay at this cottage on Head Lake. It is situated on a large private lot right on the water. You can see the neighbouring cottages when you are by the water's edge, but otherwise the cottage is set back and very private. The sunsets are spectacular. We rented as two families of three, and the kids loved having their own private bunkie :) Because it is located on a little inlet, it was perfect for swimming. The cottage itself has everything you need and is well stocked with kitchen appliances, board games, extra blankets - you name it.
Overall we found that the cottage exceeded our expectations. Even though it was unbelievably hot the week we rented (the humidex was up near the 40s so the cottage was quite warm during the day) it always cooled down by night and was comfortable to sleep. There are also a number of fans in both cottages to keep the air moving.
Communication with the owners was exceptional. They always replied promptly and with detailed information. It is a beautiful spot to vacation and we made some wonderful family memories. Would highly recommend!
We loved our time at this cottage. The separate cabin was great for our two families. (4 Adults + 3 kids). The beach area was perfect for our young children. They loved building sandcastles and playing in the shallow water and looking for clams, turtles and frogs. The lake is quiet and the water is calm and clean, although there is a bit of a mushy bottom the further out you go. We loved taking the canoe out daily to explore the little islands around the lake.
The cottage has everything you need, the pictures don't do it justice, it's beautiful. The property is big and allows space for the kids to run around and play. The fire pit was huge, we enjoyed roasting marshmallows while watching the sunset. Our favorite thing was the outdoor shower, great to clean off after a day of playing in the sand.
The owners were great to deal with and easy to contact. There is also a local caretaker near by.
Fantastic vacation spot! Thank you Brad and Anne.
