My wife, our two corgis, and I, new to Portland, stayed here for a month while we looked for a house with a full year lease. I wish we hadn't had to leave when our month was up.
The cottage is charming and the beautiful wrap-around yard was perfect for our Corgis.
A short walk away are shops, restaurants, coffee shops, a Columbia sportswear outlet, and a New Seasons grocery. Susan, Grace House's owner, gave us a gift certificate to Jade, her favorite restaurant, and the food there was delicious.
Sellwood is beautiful. Old trees overhang and line the streets. Mostly modest houses with lots of flowers out front display the neighbors' joy and pride. Sellwood Park is a block from Grace House; you can catch a baseball game, play frisbee, admire the tulips or flowering trees, or hike down to Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge to look for eagles. If you're lucky, the Rose City Rollers will roller-derbying, just a short walk farther in the hangar at Oaks Park amusement park.
Susan is friendly and helpful. She lives next door, but don't worry, she's no nosy snoop. :-)
I recommend Grace House without reservation and wholeheartedly. If it was for sale and we could afford it, we'd buy it in a minute.
I apologize for taking so long to write a review on this property. My husband and I LOVED this place. The location was perfect, the yard just wonderful! We had several parties in the beautiful yard! Susan the owner was just wonderful and I have to say this place had everything you would need! I would have liked spending more time with Susan as I think we are a kindred spirit! We had our little Yorkie with us and he loved it there! We stayed one month in this house....I hated to leave it! We will be back Susan. Thank you so much for everything! You are the best!
Grace House, in the heart of Sellwood District in Portland, is exactly as described online. However, the photo, which seems to convey a bit of an "overgrown" entry, does not do this gracious little getaway spot justice. It felt inviting from the minute we pulled up at the curb. We were greeted by the owner who had dropped by to leave fresh flowers and a tin of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, and were made to feel at home immediately. Grace house is within walking distance of the Sellwood business area where we were surprised by a grand collection of antique stores and a superb asian restaurant, Jade. Another hidden treasure within quick driving distance is the "Original Hotcake House", a 24-hour pancake shop reminiscent of America's diners of the 40s and 50s. Also within quick driving distance, thanks to our hosts' excellent directions was Oaks Amusement Park (a hit with our grandkids), the nternationally reknown Powell's Books, and the Portland Japanese Garden. The highlight of our stay was a small family birthday celebration made possible in the lovely back yard of Grace House. Our hosts set up long tables, chairs, and provided linens so we could actually make Grace House our own and accommodate guests for a birthday barbecue and cake. The nearby QFC (Quiff-cee to the neighborhood) Quality Food Center was an excellent grocery where we could easily find entire meals in the well stocked deli, or could buy food to cook ourselves in the small, but well equipped kitchen in Grace House. A seemingly endless supply of fresh linens made us feel we were in a hotel without the hassle of hallways and elevators. We have, and will continue to recommend Grace House to family and friends, and are looking forward to our next stay there.
To all vacation house hunters we used the internet to find a vacation home for several days. Included in our search was a place to return to each year and enjoy the different , cultures. However, this place is a dump, spider infested, dirty, black mold in this 100 year plus house, 1/2 truths were given regarding the house, not to mention, the large nut tree that sheds where you have to park your vehicle (in the street). Needless to say, your vehicle gets pelted.
This place is old and filthy. The door to the basement is a accordion type vinyl door not a normal door for safety and black mold on basement walls. The main and only bedroom has no door for privacy, the house has one bathroom in order to reach the bathroom you have to pass thru the main bedroom and there is no door on the bathroom except for another accordion door. This place is awful don't get suckered into renting it because of the other reviews. They are not correct in describing this terrible place. This place is a dump.
This little cottage is in a wonderful location - charming historic Sellwood, and within walking distance of a lovely park and walking trails, restaurants, shopping, bus stops, etc. But for so many urban amenities, the neighborhood is so peaceful and quiet and safe! It's like an urban oasis! The owners live right next door and are very responsive to any needs that might arise, yet are very unobtrusive as well. The cottage is small but functional, and the fenced in back and front yards provide additional space to enjoy. We enjoyed our time here and would rent this cottage again if we ever have the opportunity to come back to Portland. The fact that the owners accept dogs is wonderful - our little dog enjoyed her stay here as well!
Grace House was our first home after moving to Portland from Texas. We stayed a month with our two-and-a-half-year-old daughter. We fell in love with Sellwood and ended up renting a home nearby for the long-term. We can't say enough about the park - it was like having a huge backyard (and Grace House has lovely and well-kept outdoor space itself). You can walk to almost everything you need. The house is small and cozy, and it was clean and well-stocked with toys and books when we arrived. The owner, Susan, is wonderfully hospitable, and we are glad to remain neighbors!
