We had a wonderful week at Jean de Mai. There was something for everyone in our group of nine - 5 adults and 4 children. The pool was the perfect temperature and size for the kids and they had hours of fun each day in there, and playing in the garden which surrounds the barn. There is ample indoor and outdoor space to chill out and the seating outside the back of the barn is perfect for a sundowner. The barn has been converted and kitted out to a really high standard and gives the accommodation a sense of luxury. The outdoor kitchen was a huge bonus and we used it every evening for family meals. The setting is perfect...rural and peaceful among the sunflower fields but only a short walk into Lauzun. We have been renting villas in France for the past eight years and this is by far our favourite.
What can I say about this accommodation apart from fabulous. It is completely as described and made for a perfect holiday location. The communication with Malcolm and Paula was impeccable on booking and during our stay. The house keeper, Maggie was brilliant and came back on our arrival evening to give us some local knowledge and see if we needed anything.
The pool was amazing and although it was very hot during our visit the heated pool allowed us to swim from dawn to dusk. There is plenty of pool side furniture and the pool is in the sun all day.
The barn convention had been done to a very, very high standard and the kitchen is brilliant and fully equipped along with the main room which is like something out of a castle.
The gite is perfectly functionable but has not been done to the same standard as the barn except for the bath room, but beating the barn would take some doing, however in the heat of the summer the gite is by far the coolest place to be.
The 3 bed rooms in the barn are large with the master having an excellent ensuite. Although the accommodation is marketed for 12, it suits 10 as that way everyone has bedroom, the remaining 2 people will need to sleep on a put bed on landing or in the gite on the settee , but trust me if you do take 12 people there is still plenty of room for all.
There are plenty of fruit trees in the grounds and the peaches where delicious as were the apples. The local town of Lauzun has everything you need and a very tasty bakery. Supermarket are no more that 15 minutes away and the road the house is very quiet. We liked music played outside (loud) but this is not a problem as the house sits on its own.
The house is blessed but loads of outside shaded seating areas and again plenty of good quality furniture, so there is alway respite from the Sun.
The only down side and this is nothing to do with the advertising is the heat in the bedrooms as night. AC would be a great advantage but this in turn would put up the price if it was added and did not spoil our holiday at all.
I cannot recommend this accommodation enough and the 9 (3 families of 3) of us who shared the barn and gite can't wait to return.
Thanks you so much to the owners and Maggie.
The visitors from Lincolnshire.
What a wonderful rural property in France. Had everything we wanted and so quiet and peaceful not far from the sleepy town of Lauzan. We could relax by the pool, walk into town, play tennis at the local tennis courts, or ride bicycles around the countryside. Plenty of space for the kids, and the outside BBQ is just fantastic - I want one! A lovely time spent in a very beautiful home - thank you Paula and Malc.
Extremely well equipped comfortable location - great for large family holidays or a group of friends
When the relentless, seemingly never-ending war of attrition of each-against-all that passes for western civilisation triggers your fight-or-flight reflex, take the 'flight' option, jump a budget airline trip to southern France and declare a truce for yourself amid the luxury and splendour of Jean de Mai. If you're one of those poor unfortunate souls afflicted with the need to be doing stuff all the time, then there are plenty of activities hereabouts, including my favourite, a three-and-a-half hour canoe trip down the Dordogne from St Vincent-de-Cosse. If, however, like me, you prefer to lapse into a holiday-induced coma, idly observing the Hitchcockian abundance of swallows gathering on the telephone wires, then Jean de Mai is unbeatable.
Doze on the terrace, stay awake with the aid of the de-luxe, built-in coffee machine. The choice is yours. You can also stuff yourself speechless at the plethora of wonderful local restaurants (personal favourites: La Bruceliere at Issigeac and the quirky yet always delicious cuisine at the auberge of the Vallee de Gardeleau campsite at Serignac-Peboudou - my multi-talented wife painted the portraits above the bar.)
Competitive types can even hone their edge by mercilessly trouncing their offspring at ping-pong.
I've been to Jean de Mai three times in the last two years. What more can I say?
Let the treadmill turn without you for a while.
Our return to this fantastic property earlier in the season allowed us the benefit of the superb weather and to use the improved facilities with the addition of the "outside kitchen". The house and pool are superbly maintained with every modern convenience including a bean to cup coffee machine, ice making fridge and wine fridge. Although we did not use the Gite there have been a number of improvements since our last stay and the two properties are ideal for larger groups (2 families or those with teenagers). With plenty of books and DVD's and Boules and a table tennis on site and the large swimming pool there is plenty to do on site and the village of Lauzun and two tennis courts are a short walk. This time we drove to Bordeaux and enjoyed the Cite du Vin (Wine Museum) and the culture and architecture of this beautiful port but there are closer places to enjoy with excellent restaurants at Eymet and Issigeac. With excellent vineyards all around and open for wine tasting and produce at amazing prices, we had a fabulous holiday.
