Windmills are unique. They made Holland prosper in the 1800' s by creating land to work on. It is a strong machine with heavy beams and yet, is is a comfy house. Its atmosphere unique. Painter Piet Mondriaan painted it over 20 times, see ' Mill by Night' at the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. We aim to keep the mill in tact for generations to come. Maarten and Sietske.

Windmill in the Dutch countryside.
Beautiful renovated windmill in a picturesque scenery. We are a family of 5 (three teenagers) and we all fell in love with the place and did not want to leave. There is a lot of space inside. Downstairs is a hall, a spacious living room and a cosy country kitchen. The first floor has two double bedrooms, a washing machine, 2nd toilet, modern bathroom and the master bedroom takes the whole third floor. We visited in the winter, it was cold outside but the mill kept us very warm. The fire place can't be used (safety reason) but the central heating warms the windmill in no time. The miller ran the windmill during our stay and explained all the ins and outs, very interesting. We highly recommend this place.
Fantastic family stay
We had a wonderful stay at the end of August! Great weather and the local town festival made it extra fun for the children. The windmill had everything we needed and Maarten was very helpful with ideas and places to go locally. A very peaceful setting, with beautiful views and yet a very convenient access to Amsterdam. We loved cycling to the local village using the bikes provided and taking the train into Amsterdam. We definately love to come back one day. Thank you for a great stay!
Thank you very much! Maarten.
Before arriving at the house, I was very excited to stay there and had very high expectations. Not only was my expectations met, they were exceeded. The Windmill was very comfortable to stay in, and the views around the area were fabulous. The small village close by was very pretty, and every where we went people were friendly and helpful. Marteen, who we rented from, was very helpful, with great suggestions about where to eat, shop, sight see and more. I would love to stay in his Windmill again, and bring additional friends and family to enjoy it. We acatually got to see the Windmill in operation pumping water, and that was a great experience.
Donald was a wonderful guest, and we thank him for his kind words!
We do run the mill every week if possible, mostly on saturdays. It gives you the chance to see a 100% operational Windmill at work!
This is wonderful! We decorated the windmill as our house, and not as a holiday home, and the whole idea is: relax in the mill , swim, hike and bike, and visit Amsterdam just 20 minutes away.
Beautiful, old mill in quiet area
My family and I (2 adults and 3 teenagers) spent a week in this wonderful mill. The mill has been respectfully and beautifully restored. The area is quiet and filled with both farm animals and wild animals. The 5 bikes are fine and we biked a lot. The neighbours are very friendly. We swam in the canal between the lovely waterlillies. Almost too good to be true and definitely worth a visit!
The water in the river Gein is very clean for swimming in the summer, and in winter we scate on it!
I honestly don’t think words have been invented yet to perfectly describe the beautiful experience of staying in such an unusual and outstanding property.
It begins with Maarten..how kind and accomodating he is. He showed us how the windmill works. Yikes!! What a workout! The windmill is even better in person..nobody cared about the steep stair cases. All of the bedrooms were so lovely we took turns each night staying in each. the living space is cozy. The kitchen...albeit small ...is wonderfully equipped...and the neighbors!!!!!!! The goats, the cows, the donkey...We made friends with the goat keeper, Robert. Very excited about that as he is very serious about the rare breed he tends.
The windmill is very easy to reach driving from Schipol. Amsterdam Centrum is a quick 20 minute train ride away or 45 minutes by bicycle. Yet you are embedded in the most spectacular countryside.
The town Abcoude is dripping with Dutch charm...wonderful shops and restaurants.
I simply cannot recommend this property more highly. I cannot say it is a once in a lifetime experience as I intend to return sooner rather than later.
Thank you so much, Maarten. Xxoo
Most guests enjoy visiting Amsterdam during the day and relaxing around the mill after. Watch the river, the land and embrace the simple beauty of country life. To stay in an authentique and operational mill is simply unique.
Mondriaans painting of this mill is in the Rijksmuseum!
