We rented the Matheson house so our family could spend quality time together. Driving up the driveway and before entering the house we were already impressed by the yard and the view. Upon entering the house we were overwhelmed by the coziness and cleanliness. The three bedrooms were spacious and well maintained with snugly quilts and there was no shortage of fans for the warm nights. Everything you need to cook and bake like pots and pans and utensils is available. It was super great having a washer and dryer at our disposal too. We enjoyed swimming and fishing at all the local swimming spots. Little river beach was awesome and also Indian brook and barrachois river were fun. Simply Pizza and the Clucking Hen are two eateries down the street and they are both a must try. The owner was very accommodating and quick to reply to all of our inquiries. We hope to make this an annual family event. Overall it exceeded our expectations.
The owner's description of the home and property were accurate. If anything, we found that the real-life experience exceeded our expectations based on this web site. For example, the kitchen is spacious, and is very well supplied.
The house was clean when we arrived. We appreciated the good-quality linens and enjoyed the nice touches such as quilts and charming decor.
We enjoyed the mowed loop through the property and the mowed trail up the hill to the mountain. It's obvious that there is pride of home ownership, and that the owner cares about stewardship of the land. Getting to the waterfront can be an interesting challenge, but certainly worth the effort. We walked the spit between the pond and the bay while the tides were changing.
The owner provides clear, pleasant and fast communications. We experienced one home maintenance issue, and the owner dealt with it pronto as soon as we alerted him.
Clearly we would recommend Matheson Farmhouse to others.
The location on the Cabot Trail was ideal for us. It's about 30 minutes to the National Park entrance, and about the same distance to both Sydney and Baddeck.
We had a number of park favorites. Trails: Middlehead, Le Buttereau, MacIntosh Brook, Mary Ann Falls and Green Cove. Beaches: Black Brook, Ingonish, Le Bloc. Nearby fishing harbours (take a camera): Little River, Neil's Harbour, Margaree, Cheticamp.
As well, we recommend these activities: The Bird Island Boat Tour in Big Bras D'Or (better than Donelda's and worth the drive), Louisbourg Fortress, the Miner's Museum in Glace Bay (be sure to take the underground tour!), the Bell Museum in Baddeck.
Our favorite artisans were the Pewter Store next door and Arts North, up in Cape North. The Clucking Hen, just a few minutes up the road, is an excellent restaurant.
For groceries, you can shop at the Co-op in Baddeck. We saved by stopping at Port Hawkesbury's Great Atlantic and WalMart on the way in, and put the perishables in a cooler.
You will want to get used to the Englishtown Ferry as a shortcut. Be sure to buy a 10-trip pass for $13.50 instead of $5.50 per trip. You can buy the pass onboard.
We had a fabulous trip and came home happy!
Just back from a week at the Matheson House. The home was well equipped and comfortable and offered that getaway feeling we were looking for. Only an hour from Ingonish and 30 min from Baddeck, it was a great place to head off for other adventures we were looking for. The community of Indian Brook is filled with charming artisan shops which we loved exploring. A neighbouring resort was more than happy to rent kayaks and canoes and we were able to explore the estuary to our heart's content. Found our way to a local swimming hole and the ocean with ease, and explored the trails behind the house for more adventure and connection to the nature around us. A great escape.
So nice to get away up on the Cabot Trail. We spent a lot of our time playing in the water on their pond. My son was 2 years old and his biggest thrill was to throw rocks into the water and watch them splash. There is an unlimited supply of rocks, and a lot of water. I read books and enjoyed the views and occasional seal that would pop his head up to take a look around. We went down to the pier and bought crabs from the fishermen as they came back in. Spent a few days hiking up behind the house too. Recommended if you want to get away.
My family of four visited Matheson House for a week a few years ago. We really loved the clean, comfortable, historic house. It was a fantastic, central location from which to explore Cape Breton. We found great day hikes or water adventures every day. We especially enjoyed hiking in the National Park, sailing to watch whales, swimming in the Indian Brook swimming hole, the Gaelic College, a benefit crab dinner at the Indian Brook firehouse walking distance from the house, and returning to Matheson House each evening to relax and plan the next day. It was a family trip with my children, now college age and "gone", which my wife and I will treasure always.
