My family gathered at the lodge for 9 days including two weekends, from as far away as Stockholm, Sweden and as close as Upton, Maine.
We prepared ourselves by reading the comments on the internet and the information provided by Mr. Meredith, and expected no surprises. The tone of the written information and contract were somewhat bureaucratic, which worried me some, but I got an entirely different impression while talking to Mr. Meredith and the caretaker Mr. Archer on the phone.
The surprises started coming upon our arrival.
Having a long history with vacations houses, I know from experience that at least 50% of the utilities promised in the adverts either don't exist or are out of order. Warm water is either nonexistent or very limited, and the caretaker is on vacation somewhere very far away.
Not true at the Lodge! As good as everything worked. Maybe not the new appliances you have at home but they were functional. Plenty of refrigerators, two grills, and plenty of hot water. Not a place for a luxury vacation, but a place where the surprises are pleasant ones.
On the two occasions I called Mr. Archer, he was there within minutes to solve our problems.
On behalf of my whole family I would like to thank you all, and I dare promise now that we will be back.
Fun was had by all! The little ones could run out the dock and jump into the lake - while the older kids took our canoe up the creek to fish. We ate, we played and we had a wonderful week. The Lakeside House is just secluded enough that our music did not offend neighbors. We thought the houses could have been a bit cleaner - but that did not deter from our good time. I would recomend either place - particularly the Lakeside House for large groups. This is a bueatiful natural area - almost beathtaking at dawn and evening at the lake.
We have just returned from a stay at the Lakeside House...and overall it met our expectations although we were a bit disappointed the lake was so far away..and by the noise from the road (although much was related to construction nearby and we realize this is beyond your control) .With hindsight...we realize the disappointment with being so far from the lake was probably our not reading the description well enough - But we would have been appeased with a better view, based on our own history with such things we know that by removing a tree or two would relieve some of the frustration without hurting the overall scenery..or the property..and I had to hold the guys back from doing their own adjustments......We were able to figure out the swimming for the small ones, and did use the rowboat, although it is on the "rough side"however, we did not find the canoe...Fishing was a disappointment as we thought from the description we would be able to fish right on the property, the fisherman reported there were no trout in the "trout pond"......The house was large enough to sleep all 14 of us quite easily allowing for each family unit to have their own private room, one or two of the beds were quite hard but the large living spaces were wonderful...as well as the deck. .it was very nice to all eat at one table.......The home was clean and comfortable, and the puzzles were used... We did find it necessary to bring more than "linens" and would suggest you add to the booklet to bring towels as well as paper goods (toilet paper and papertowels) as they were not mentioned and a special run to Beebe was called for....
Overall, we give the Lakeside house a good rating and would recommend it to others, if they understand the items noted...It was fun to visit a new area, travel across the border was not a big thing, Magog fun to visit, and the area is beautiful..
We appreciate the chance to have us all in one house, ranging in ages from 3 months to 81 yrs the house filled the bill for this reunion we do every 3 years....and being allowed to have our well behaved dog with us was an added bonus...she loved it...Lots of hiking and investigating was enjoyed....
This lodge is indeed large, albeit dark, as is the surrounding acreage. What it is not is lake front. The house sits on a hill, across a well traveled road, from which one might catch glimpses of the lake (but not the beach) from certain points. The lake is either a short hike down the road or across the lawn and down a (slippery) path. Do not expect to sit on the porch and watch your kids in the water. Use is provided of a small shared waterfront, but the notion of a beach cookout is not practical. The "beach area" is not suitable for small children or particularly swimmer-friendly. The local caretaker was very helpful, the owners responsive, and the canoe is a plus, but the rowboat is nonfunctional. Still, this is a lovely lake. No mooring, and the concrete pier is not well suited to tie up a motorboat - too shallow to easily accommodate our 19' boat. The property abuts a very long channel into a marsh/wetlands, which made for fun canoeing and wildlife viewing. Minimal paper goods supplied, although presumably one could call the caretaker rather than simply purchasing their own supplies as we did; jig saw puzzles are plentiful. The place is fine for large groups who want to be near but not on the water. The photos showing "view from the beach" are just that; they do not show view from the lodge offered for rent.
